At Sandylands, we believe that physical education is about far more than learning sports — it is about building healthy bodies, healthy minds and positive attitudes that last a lifetime. We see physical activity as fundamental to wellbeing, resilience and happiness, and we are committed to ensuring every child has the chance to enjoy and succeed in this area of school life.

To bring this vision to life, we provide a rich and varied curriculum that develops children’s skills across dance, gymnastics, athletics, football, hockey, basketball and more. We also teach children about the importance of healthy living, helping them understand how being active supports both physical and mental health.

Competition and teamwork are central to our approach. As members of the Lancaster and Heysham School Sports Network, our pupils regularly represent Sandylands in local events. We like to celebrate the successes of our children, including winning a local football league two years in a row! Within school, our intra-school tournaments give every child the chance to experience the excitement of competition and the pride of working together towards a shared goal.

Beyond lessons, we extend opportunities through after-school clubs, specialist coaching, and initiatives such as Bikeability. Leadership is nurtured too, with our trained Playground Leaders in Key Stage 2 supporting younger pupils in staying active at breaktimes. We also value pupil voice: our weekly Feel Good Friday sports sessions give children the freedom to choose activities that make them feel good.

Through all of these opportunities, we aim to instil a lifelong love of movement and activity. At Sandylands, PE is not simply about sport — it is about equipping children with the skills, confidence and values they need to lead healthy, active lives.
